Angus Reference MapReference map of Angus
Covering an area of approximately 2,181 sq km (842 sq miles) Angus is a hilly county. In the south the Sidlaw Hills rise to a height of 454 m (1,491 feet) and in the north and west is the area known as the Braes of Angus, which comprises the southernmost part of the Scottish Highlands, the highest point being Glas Maol at 1,067 m (3,502 feet) high. This area was incorporated into the Cairngorms National Park in 2003.

Between the Braes of Angus and the Sidlaw Hills is the fertile Strathmore valley, which is predominantly used for agriculture. Brechin lies on the South Esk River which is noted by birdwatchers for its migratory birds, including waders and geese. This county is also popular with walkers and climbers, and with skiers in winter.

To the south of the region the City of Dundee is a major tourist attraction. Made a royal burgh by the Scottish King William the Lion in 1190, Dundee became an important town, but suffered greatly from English raids from the 13th to 17th centuries. Having prospered from fishing and whaling, Dundee is now an important financial, educational and cultural centre.
