With an area of 3,263 sq km (1,260 sq miles) Tyrone is the largest county in Northern Ireland. The central area is low-lying and boggy but is bounded in the north by the Sperrin Mountains rising to 683 m (2,240 feet), in the southwest by Bessy Bell, which rises to 423 m (1,387 feet), and in the east by Lough Neagh.

The area was settled in prehistoric times, and there are many Christian sites in the county, including Dromore, where St Patrick is believed to have founded an Abbey for the first woman who became a nun by his inspiration. Trouble between local chiefs later laid the area open for occupation by Scottish migrants as part of the Ulster Plantation scheme.

County Tyrone is mainly rural, dependent upon sheep and cattle farming, with crops grown in the fertile river valleys. Tourism plays an important part in the local economy, and the area is renowned for its excellent freshwater fishing, range of prehistoric sites, and the beautiful Sperrin Mountains, which feature dense forests and an abundance of wildlife.
