Herm, Channel Islands Reference Map
Herm is a tranquil beach paradise that is easily reached from Guernsey by ferry. Guernsey is the second largest of the Channel Islands with an area of approximately 63.5 sq km (24.5 sq miles). Guernsey is flat and low to the north, and the southern part rises to a plateau about 90 m (300 ft) above sea level, with a rugged coastline that features steep cliffs and sandy bays.
Guernsey was occupied by the Romans and Normans, and during the Second World War, German Troops invaded and held the Channel Islands for a period of five years. Historic points of note include Castle Cornet, a medieval fortress built on an offshore islet in the 13th century, and the parish church of St Peter Port, which contains some 13th century nave arches.
Dairy farming, agriculture, fishing and tourism are all mainstays of the economy in Guernsey, and the warm climate and beauty of the island make it a top destination for holidaymakers.
