Scilly Isles Reference Map
The Scilly Isles are separated from Cornwall by some of the most dangerous waters around the coast of the United Kingdom. An archipelago island group 45 km (28 miles) south west of Land's End, they consist of about 140 rocky islands (many of which are just outcrops of jagged rock) only five are inhabited: St Mary's, Tresco, St Martin's, St Agnes, and Bryher.
Prehistoric remains show that the islands have been populated since c. 2000 BC, and they have now been designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, being noted for their rugged granite cliffs, wild scenery and a mild climate that allows a flourishing trade in flower-growing.
St Mary's, by far the largest of the islands, attracts the largest proportion of visitors, but Tresco offers the appeal of subtropical gardens, and St Martin's is famous for the variety of shells on its excellent white sandy beaches. All of the islands have seen their fair share of shipwrecks.
