East Riding of Yorkshire Reference MapReference map of East Riding of Yorkshire
The East Riding of Yorkshire, bordered on the east by the North Sea, encompasses a large area north of the River Humber, including the Holderness Peninsula. Much of the north western part of the area consists of the Yorkshire Wolds, moor-like chalk uplands that rise to a height of 246 m (807 ft). The chalk is clearly visible in the white cliffs of Flamborough Head. The flatter coastal area to the south is noted for the fertile richness of its clay soils.

The Romans were the first to settle in the lowland region, which became their military base for operations against invaders from the north. Anglo-Saxons then penetrated the region from the east, via the Humber estuary and its tributaries. They cleared woodlands and established settlements in the valleys. Fishing towns sprung up along the coast and the area continued as a rural oasis, until the 19th century when the increasing industrial output of Yorkshire caused the rapid growth of Hull port.
