Alderney is the most northerly of the Channel Islands and is approximately 8 sq km (3 sq miles) in size. Lying in the English Channel off the coast of Normandy, France, the island mainly comprises of a plateau averaging about 60 m (200 ft) above sea level.
The island was first settled in the Bronze Age, and evidence suggests the Romans later occupied it for some time. In the 11th century Alderney came under Norman control, and thereafter into the possession of the English Crown, apart from a short period when German troops occupied the island from June 1940 to May 1945.
The island is administered as part of Guernsey and is a dependency of the British Crown. Dairy farming is the main industry with most of the population living in the only urban area of St Anne's. Tourism also plays an important role in the economy, with holidaymakers drawn by the temperate climate and picturesque scenery.
