Cambridgeshire Reference MapReference map of Cambridgeshire
This low-lying agricultural region includes the country's largest area of reclaimed marshland, the Fens.

Neolithic and Bronze age people were the first to settle this area in approximately 300 AD. Cambridge was later developed by the Romans, who built a small camp alongside the River Cam and attempted to drain and cultivate the silted-up areas toward the north of the county. Later Anglo-Saxon occupation saw the area become a wasteland, except for the settlement of Ely, which later became a cathedral city.

The University of Cambridge, the second oldest university in England, is believed to have been started by a group of students fleeing riots in Oxford who arrived in the town in 1209. The oldest college, Peterhouse, was founded in 1284.

Cambridge has retained much of its medieval appearance and has countless fine buildings. The town acts as a market centre for the agricultural sector, and administrative centre for the county. Peterborough is an important rail junction and an industrial, commercial, and agricultural centre with the magnificent St Peter's Cathedral at its heart.
