Northamptonshire Reference MapReference map of Northamptonshire
Northamptonshire, often called the county of "squires and spires", has an abundance of interesting churches, country houses, market towns and pretty villages. The county is crossed by the Northamptonshire Uplands, with cliff-like outcrops to the northwest. To the north, Rockingham Forest once extended far into Leicestershire.

The region was first settled by Pre-Celtic and Celtic peoples, and there are some traces of Roman settlements and roads. It was not until the Saxons arrived that the importance of the area grew with its incorporation into the Kingdom of Mercia. During the Civil War, Oliver Cromwell was victorious over Charles I at the Battle of Naseby (just north of Northampton) in 1645, and Charles was subsequently imprisoned at Holdenby House.

The county has long prospered from agriculture, and during the 18th century shoe making became a major industry in Northampton, the reason why the local football team are called "The Cobblers".
