Sark, Channel Islands Reference Map
Sark lies roughly in the middle of the three larger Channel Islands, with Guernsey to the west, Alderney to the northeast and Jersey to the southwest. It comprises of two landmasses, Great Sark and Little Sark, joined by a narrow strip of land. The island rises to 114 m (375 ft) above sea level, is mainly flat and has an area of approximately about 5 sq km (2 sq miles).
In the 11th century Sark came under Norman control, and thereafter into the possession of the English Crown. Since the 16th century, it has been ruled as a fief by a hereditary seigneur or dame who is not elected in association with a legislative assembly, and from June 1940 to May 1945 the island was occupied by German Troops.
The main settlement on Sark is Creux Harbour, where most of the population is based. Sark is administered as part of Guernsey and is a dependency of the British Crown. The small island supports dairy and arable farming, market gardening and tourism. Unspoilt by motor cars, Sark has a temperate climate and a stunningly picturesque coastline of steep cliffs and sandy bays.
